Eight pupils from our school recently had the opportunity to attend the Play Symposium hosted by National Museum of Ireland, Museum of Childhood.

Two children from each class of the classes 3rd to 6th took part in this national event which focused on play as a vital aspect of children’s health, education, and wellbeing.

In preparation for the symposium, our pupils collaborated on a Photovoice project, guided by researcher Michelle Bergin from University College Cork. The children worked in partnership with 13 children from a large urban school in Limerick, exploring their experiences and perspectives on play through photography.

On the day of the event, a bus collected both groups of children, bringing them together for what proved to be an enjoyable and enriching experience. Prior to making their presentation the children had time to enjoy free play in the open green spaces and among the logs and natural features in Merrion Square Park. This outdoor playtime was a highlight, allowing the 2 groups of children to connect and enjoy unstructured play in a beautiful setting.

The symposium gave our pupils the chance to present their photographs to an audience of adults, including educators, researchers, and policymakers. Each child confidently explained the thinking behind their images and the messages they wished to convey about play in their lives. Their insights were thoughtful, honest, and powerful, offering a valuable child’s perspective on an important topic.

As a small rural school with 98 pupils, we are incredibly proud of how our students represented our school community. They showed great confidence, creativity, and teamwork throughout the project and on the day itself.

This experience not only celebrated the importance of play but also empowered our pupils to have their voices heard on a national stage, an opportunity they will not soon forget.
